The announcement was made during a press conference that was attended by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, General Co-Chair of MBZIRC 2020 Steering Committee, and Executive Vice-President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Lakmal Seneviratne, Associate VP for Research, and Director of Khalifa University Center for Autonomous Robotic Systems (KUCARS), as well, Dr. Fahad Al Maskari, Manager, MBZIRC 2020.

MBZIRC is a global robotics competition that aims to provide an environment to foster innovation and technical excellence in robotics, while encouraging spectacular performance with robotics technology.

Themed ‘Tackling Challenges, Offering Solutions’, MBZIRC 2020 will consist of three individual Challenges and a triathlon style ‘Grand Challenge’, focusing on robotics solutions in a smart city applications. Safely neutralizing stray drones, construction automation, and urban fire-fighting will be the key challenge focus areas for MBZIRC 2020. The MBZIRC 2020 Call for Proposals will be announced shortly.

Some of the top teams that have expressed their intent to participating in the MBZIRC 2020 include the Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech from the US, University of Leeds from the UK, University of New South Wales from Australia, ETH Zurich from Switzerland, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Japan’s University of Tokyo, India’s IIT Kanpur, as well as China’s Tsinghua University and Beijing Institute of Technology.

MBZIRC 2020 will address key application challenges such as security, civic emergency response, and construction automation. Challenge 1 requires a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to autonomously track, locate and capture hostile UAVs. Challenge 1 is motivated by UAV safety.

Challenge 2 requires a team of robots (UAVs and unmanned ground vehicles – UGVs) to collaborate and autonomously locate, pick, transport and assemble different types of brick shaped objects to build pre-defined structures, in an outdoor environment. Challenge 2 is motivated by construction automation.

Challenge 3 requires a team of UAVs and UGVs to collaborate and autonomously extinguish a series of simulated fires in a simulated urban high rise building. Challenge 3 is motivated by the use of robots for urban fire-fighting.

The Grand Challenge requires a team of robots (UAVs and UGVs) to compete in a triathlon-type event combining aspects of all three categories. As in the inaugural edition of the Challenge, MBZIRC 2020 will take place in an outdoor, open, arena(s) approximately the size of a football pitch.

The MBZIRC is a biennial international robotics competition that provides an ambitious and technologically demanding set of challenges. The event aims to bring forth the latest advancements in robotics, while giving an opportunity to researchers and industry professionals to showcase their innovation capabilities.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA , September 27, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — The lives of two healthcare caregivers changed in two different, dramatic ways, thanks to a generous organ donation.

Kingslee Teo is a respiratory equipment assistant with Intermountain Healthcare Homecare in Ogden, Utah. Earlier this year he overheard his co-worker, Monica Anderson, mention that her husband, Jason, is living with end-stage kidney disease and on a kidney transplant waiting list that could take years.

Teo, who recently got married, went home and considered whether he could be the donor. A few days later he approached Monica and suggested he be tested. Monica and Jason were amazed at his offer and generosity, and their amazement turned to joy when after months of testing Teo was found to be a perfect match.

“There is absolutely no other kind and selfless gesture as what Kingslee is doing for me,” said Jason. “I will never be able to repay him for what he has given me — a second chance at life.”

Sadly, 20 people die every day in America while waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant. According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than 3,500 people are removed from the kidney transplant waiting list each year because they become too sick to undergo a transplant surgery.

"Patients die on dialysis every day," said Manuel Rodriguez, MD, a surgeon with the Intermountain Medical Center Transplant Program in Salt Lake City, where the transplant surgery was performed. "Organ donation is where we see the best in humanity. It's the ultimate gift."

Jason had spent more than four years on the transplant waiting list while living with end-stage kidney failure. He continued to work a demanding and busy full-time job as a bank manager, then coming home and spending six hours a night doing the dialysis process. The family keeps a machine in their home office for at-home dialysis. A dextrose solution goes into Jason’s body, helping to clean it and do the work of his kidneys.

“It’s been hard not knowing how much time he has with us,” said Monica. “The dialysis therapy works extremely well for him, but things could have changed overnight.”

The transplant allows Jason to live a normal life again. As he recovers, he’ll be able to do things like travel on an airplane without the hassle of carrying medical equipment, not to mention have improved overall health and energy.

"It's been hard," Jason said. "I'm full of life and vivacious. I can't wait to get back to doing the things I love. Already I feel so much better."

“Organ donation really does allow people to have a second chance at life,” said Diane Alonso, MD, medical director of the abdominal transplant program at Intermountain Medical Center. “When a living donor, like Kingslee, steps up and offers a friend, colleague or sometimes even a complete stranger a life-saving organ, it truly is a gift of life.”

For Teo, the donor, he says that when the opportunity presented itself, he decided to take the chance to better someone else’s life.

“I hope that people will hear this story and have the urge to save someone’s life, too. I hope that kidney donations become more common as a result and that people see how much this can change a life,” he said.

Teo is taking off six weeks of work, as donating a kidney is major surgery. “I'm hoping for a speedy recovery for both myself and Jason,” he says.

Four days after the procedure, he was already feeling better.

The transplant took place at Intermountain Medical Center on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with Jason and Teo in adjacent operating rooms.

Scorpius Space Launch Company (SSLC) announced today its market introduction of all-composite, cryogenic, high pressure tanks incorporating its anti-slosh baffle technology innovation. SSLC has been pioneering structurally strong Type V pressure vessels for a decade under the trademark PRESSURMAXX™, having delivered well over 100 tanks to more than 25 aerospace customers. Broadening applications of their line of light-weight products, SSLC is now offering carbon-fiber anti-slosh baffles integrated to the interior walls of propellant tanks. Deliveries of such tanks to the small launcher industry have begun this summer enabling rocket designs that use the propellant tanks as primary load bearing elements of the vehicle.

The PRESSURMAXX™ product line includes high pressure vessels that can hold up to several thousand psi pressure. They are made to be compatible with all common fluids and gases used in Aerospace and cover a temperature range of -320F to +170F.

In 2010, SSLC successfully developed and tested a fluid motion damping system for a spacecraft program. This system employs flexible anti-slosh baffle segments to help stabilize the vehicle’s steering system and has now been implemented commercially for launch vehicle propellant tanks.
Built with SSLC’s proprietary Sapphire 77 cryogenic resin system, and carbon fiber materials, the tanks contain no metals, fasteners, welds, or additional sealants.
