End US-Germany Cooperation Aimed at Importing, Dumping Highly Radioactive German Spent Fuel at DOE’s Savannah River Site

SRS Watch logo

SRS Watch is a non-profit organization working on sound policies and projects by the U.S. Department of Energy. Since 2013, SRS Watch has opposed the dumping of AVR and THTR spent fuel in Germany on SRS.

SRS Watch protests proposed export of spent fuel by the Jülicher Entsorgungsgesellschaft für Nuklearanlagen (JEN) from Forschungszentrum Jülich to US DOE’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina. A new safe and secure storage facility must immediately be built at Jülich.

No shipment of AVR highly radioactive spent fuel by JEN from Jülich to SRS in South Carolina or Ahaus, Germany! Time to move foward with a safe, secure stoarge facility at Jülich.

Time to Terminate SRS-JEN Cooperation Aimed at Importing Highly Radioactive German Spent Fuel to DOE’s Savannah River Site; Storage at Jülich Only Viable Option

There is no need for this dumping-for-profit scheme to be further pursued; it’s time to implement new options for the secure management of the AVR spent fuel in Jülich, Germany, where it’s now stored.”

— Tom Clements, Director, Savannah River Site Watch

COLUMBIA, SC, USA, February 21, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Columbia, South Carolina – Cooperation between the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) and a German nuclear waste management company to import, reprocess and dump highly radioactive German spent fuel at SRS must be terminated, according to a letter sent by the public interest group Savannah River Site Watch to U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette.

The proposal to ship highly radioactive spent fuel from two long-closed experimental gas-cooled reactors in Germany to SRS, a 310-square mile facility located near Aiken, South Carolina, has been dragging on since 2012. The two reactors in question, AVR and THTR-300, were fueled with graphite spheres impregnated with uranium. The 900,000+ irradiated spheres in question, some with highly enriched uranium and some with low-enriched uranium, are stored in 457 casks at the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and at Ahaus, Germany, both located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

The materials would be shipped by sea via port facilities Charleston, South Carolina to SRS, where the graphite spheres would be reprocessed and removed uranium disposed of as waste and high-level waste possibly dumped into the SRS waste tanks, increasing the waste burden at the site. The research work into technical aspects of the proposal is being conducted by the Savannah River National Laboratory, which is managed by private contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

“The scheme to dump highly radioactive German spent fuel at SRS would needlessly increase the amount of hard-to-manage nuclear waste at the site and must be terminated,” said Tom Clements, director of the public interest watchdog group Savannah River Site Watch (SRS Watch – https://srswatch.org/). “It’s clear that there is no need for this dumping-for-profit project to be dragged out any longer and it’s time to implement new options for the safe, secure management of the spent fuel in question at the Jülich site in Germany, where it’s now stored.”

Cooperation between SRS and the entity managing 152 CASTOR casks at Jülich, the Jülicher Entsorgungsgesellschaft für Nuklearanlagen (JEN), has been under a Work for Others agreement that has been modified six times, with the most recent modification from September 2019. That version expires on February 29, 2020 and should not be renewed, according to SRS Watch. The current version of the agreement and two attachments concerning plans to import 33 unirradiated spheres and some irradiated material were obtained by SRS Watch via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. (See documents in “notes” below).

The spent fuel at in Jülich is currently stored in a facility with an expired license, so authorities are considering building a new storage facility at the site. Though it has come under increasing criticism and would be illegal under German law, the option to ship the fuel to SRS remains barely alive. Also under consideration is its shipment to the Ahaus storage facility.

“After thorough public review of the options for management of the AVR spent fuel, it is abundantly clear that the safest option from environmental and non-proliferation perspectives is to immediately build a new storage facility at Jülich,” said Clements. “It’s time for foot dragging by JEN to end and for plans for the new storage building construction to be implemented at Jülich as rapidly as possible,” added Clements.

In the February 20, 2020 letter to DOE, SRS Watch points out DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration made a determination in 2013 that there is no nuclear non-proliferation reason to ship the spent fuel to SRS and, thus, there is no need to explore export or reprocessing of it. (See NNSA memo "Proliferation Attractiveness of Jülich Graphite Spheres" here: https://www.srswatch.org/uploads/2/7/5/8/27584045/doe_memo_on_no_proliferation_risk_of_avr_spent_fuel_august_1_2013.pdf)

Dr. Mark Flecker Discusses 5 Foods to Eat for Better Eye Health

Mark Fleckner MD

GARDEN CITY, NY, UNITED STATES, February 20, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Nutrition can significantly impact various aspects of the body, including eye health. Mark R Fleckner MD, a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in treating diseases of the retina, strives to educate patients in prevention as well as treatment methods. He suggests five foods to eat for healthier eyes.

5 Best Foods for Eye Health

Leafy Greens
Leafy greens, such as kale, watercress, arugula, and spinach, are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients related to vitamin A and beta carotene. These antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. The body needs fat to absorb these antioxidants, so eat your leafy greens with a healthy source of fat, such as fish or olive oil, avocado, or nuts.

Eggs
Eggs are another great source of lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as zinc, another nutrient that can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration. Dr. Mark Fleckner says it is important to note these nutrients are stored in the yolk, not the whites. Eat the whole egg to get the most nutritional value.

Fish
Fatty fish, including salmon, trout, mackerel, and tuna, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These “healthy fats” are essential for eye health and retinal function. The American Optometric Association* says omega-3s can reverse dry eye and help prevent age-related macular degeneration. These nutrients are also good for your brain, heart, and skin. Nuts and seeds, such as almonds and walnuts are another great source of omega-3s.

Berries
Berries, particularly blueberries, cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, are another food rich in antioxidants. They also contain high amounts of vitamin C, which can boost your immune system. A healthy immune system can reduce your risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration. It also promotes faster healing if you are injured.

Carrots
Carrots contain high amounts of beta-carotene and vitamin A. These nutrients help the body synthesize the protein rhodopsin, Dr. Mark Fleckner explains, which helps the eyes adjust to the dark. Lutein can also help prevent age-related macular degeneration.

In addition to a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, Dr. Mark Fleckner recommends seeing your eye doctor regularly.

On Thursday, students at Shema Kolainu – Hear Our Voices (SKHOV) got a first-hand glimpse at the inside of a Hatzolah ambulance.

BROOKLYN, NY, UNITED STATES, February 20, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Thursday, students at Shema Kolainu – Hear Our Voices (SKHOV) got a first-hand glimpse at the inside of a Hatzolah ambulance.

The demonstration was part of an ongoing project to teach SKHOV students about participating in the community by introducing them to doctors and community helpers, such as Hatzolah volunteers. The project also focused on “green” and “red” behaviors, with green representing good behaviors and red representing behaviors people shouldn’t have. Meeting with community helpers is an educational experience for students, helping them develop a better understanding of these services and appreciate that they’re designed to help.

Tziporrah Roth, a teacher at SKHOV, explained that the goal was to educate students on, “How to help themselves by bringing them into a real-world situation.”

The students in the classroom learned about the different medical professions, the instruments that are used and why they are used. Roth added that Hatzolah served as a “doctor’s office on wheels” to help students understand that doctors and EMT’s are here to help and nothing to be afraid of.

While learning about the community in the classroom, Roth noted that the children gain more of an understanding when they experience things in person.

In addition to personally interacting with a member of Hatzolah, the children got to experiment with ambulance equipment, such as a radio and stethoscope. The hands-on demonstration offered the children an opportunity to learn more about Hatzolah, an organization that works tirelessly to save lives.

Hatzolah is a volunteer emergency medical service organization that has been serving communities around the world for decades.

Shema Kolainu – Hear Our Voices founded by Dr. Joshua Weinstein, offers a broad spectrum of evidence-based education and therapeutic programs to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, (ASD) and related disabilities in a warm and nurturing environment. Replete® Brings Consumers One-Click Access to their Health and Care Data

Take Control Of Your Health Today

Partners with CommonWell Health Alliance® to provide access to the consumer’s data

Our commitment to drive nationwide health data exchange has always been centered around the needs of the patient”

— Paul Wilder, CommonWell Health Alliance Executive Director

DELAWARE, USA, February 20, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Replete® is proud to announce its launch into the health-tech market with a first-of-its-kind mobile application that will allow consumers to access their health data, including electronic health records, lab tests results and vaccination and immunization records, as well as help consumers track and maintain their health goals. The app features cutting edge artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning that will detect the decline of clinical efficacy of any treatment/medications based on a consumer’s feelings and nudge them and their physician to act upon the health changes.

Allowing consumers to access their health data can only be possible if they are securely verified. As such, Replete has worked with a credit rating agency to build an ID Verification solution that protects and allows health records to be available to the public through their consumer’s mobile device application. Replete’s ID resolution will help people have better, faster access to their clinical data while keeping the information protected and secure. The verification of personal and digital data, along with authentication services will be a huge benefit to all those that require daily access to their clinical data securely.

Without access to both consumers health data via their clinicians, as well as a way to identify and connect the patient to their disparate health records at provider sites across the county, the value of the app would be challenging. As such, Replete became a member and service adopter of CommonWell Health Alliance®, a not-for-profit trade association devoted to the simple vision that health data should be available to individuals and caregivers regardless of where care occurs. Through the CommonWell nationwide network, Replete has a potential consumer base of more than 76 million individuals. In addition, its consumers will have access to clinical data at more than 15,000 participating provider sites within the rapidly growing CommonWell network.

“Our commitment to drive nationwide health data exchange has always been centered around the needs of the patient,” said Paul Wilder, CommonWell Health Alliance Executive Director. “By working with organizations like Replete, we can empower individuals to have more control over their health care experience while also giving clinicians additional tools to improve care coordination.”

Replete’s approach is unique because their application introduces a four-tier system experience for each user:

● The self-nudge – User decides which health trackers they would like to be reminded of, ranging from tracking sleep duration to smoking less and many more.
● The physician nudge – Communication between physician and patient are streamlined by enabling physicians to keep track of their patients and the health data provided by Replete, helping encourage patients toward healthy goals.
● Machine-learning-driven news – Replete takes all available health data and curates news for users that relate to their specific medical conditions and interests. When users open the news feature, there will be up-to-date news, trends and treatments that emerge in the market.
● A.I.-driven nudge – By tracking an individual’s data, Replete’s powerful A.I. can determine the clinical decline of a patient’s medications and signal both the patient and their physician to act.

Replete is now live for the general public on two use cases:
• For Providers: Replete is working with providers to connect to the Replete network, allowing them to not only get additional details on their participating patients, but also monitor those patients’ behaviors.
• For Patients: Additionally, after successful ID verification, individuals can leverage the Replete Health app to directly download their personal health data to their mobile phone.

“There is a huge potential in making positive social change that will move people towards learning about and taking control over their health,” said Venkat Timmaraju, founder and CEO of Replete. “We have worked very hard over the last three years to bring Replete to life, with a single goal of allowing the general public to securely access their own medical data and manage their health.”

To make it accessible to everyone, Replete is completely free to use for the general public as well as providers. Consumers can find out more details, including checking whether their provider is connected via Replete, at https://search.repletehealth.com/.

AFN collaborates with WWF to combat plastic pollution in the ‘Your Plastic Diet’ campaign lobbying for a globally binding treaty on plastic pollution.

The only way we are going to stem the flow of plastic into nature is at a global level, a Paris Climate Agreement, but against plastic pollution.”

— Kim Stengert, Chief, Strategic Communication & External Relations, WWF-SGP

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, February 20, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Asia’s largest TV and Online food channel, the Asian Food Network (AFN) is shocking food lovers into action to help save the environment in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). A series of filmed episodes sees Celebrity chefs cooking delicious food such as Soy Sauce Sea Bass and Spicy Clams before adding plastic items like shredded water bottles and grated plastic straws to the food.

The recipes are the latest work in an ongoing campaign created by Grey Malaysia, ‘Your Plastic Diet’, which was launched last year to help WWF lobby for a globally binding treaty on plastic pollution. The campaign raises awareness on how plastic pollution has led to particles of microplastic being ingested by people all over the world. The specially commissioned study with The University of Newcastle found that people could be consuming on average five grams of plastic a week, the same as eating a credit card.

Launching this week (w/c 17/2), the specially created recipes will be running across the AFN network, in a total of 11 countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Taiwan). The combination of twenty separate ‘60 and ‘30 second spots include:

– Sarah Benjamin frying Spicy Clams with shredded plastic cup

– Sherson Lian cooking up a comforting oyster porridge with chopped plastic plate

– Debbie Wong baking soy sauce sea bass with granulated plastic straws
https://youtu.be/9m1PegwuAVg

– A DIY video recipe on how to make Basil Prawns with sliced plastic bottle
https://youtu.be/ZgxlP3vPdv0

The recipes all contain a call to action to join the movement of people from around the world who are already lobbying their governments to change their policy on plastic pollution. Launched by Grey Malaysia in June last year, the Plastic Diet campaign has helped WWF gain support from over 1.6 million people from over 180 countries…”. – becoming the largest and fastest growing movement in WWF history.

Says Kim Stengert, Chief, Strategic Communication and External Relations at WWF-Singapore: “The only way we are going to stem the flow of plastic into nature is at a global level, a Paris Climate Agreement, but against plastic pollution. From the G20 to the UN Assembly, the ‘Plastic Diet’ is now a constant reminder to policy and decision makers everywhere that urgent action is needed, and that over 1.6m people from 180 countries are counting on them to agree on a globally binding treaty on plastic.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Graham Drew, Executive Creative Director of Grey Malaysia: “It’s hard to think of a better partner to highlight the fact that plastic is now in almost everything we eat and drink than Asia’s largest food network, it’s brilliant to have their support. Your Plastic Diet reveals a shocking truth, but importantly gives the public an active role in making the changes the world’s governments need to make.”

Fertility Road Announces Exclusive Global Partnership With AI Company Life Whisperer

A new partnership brings together two leaders in global fertility and paves the way for a leap forward in the way scientists choose the most viable embryos.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, February 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — A new partnership brings together two leaders in the global fertility market and paves the way for a leap forward in the way scientists choose the most viable embryos in the IVF selection process.

Fertility Road is the world’s leading preconception platform for patients and has, over a decade been at the forefront of promoting emerging technologies, treatments and support to fertility patients across the globe. Working across five continents Fertility Road has an extensive network of clinic partners and interacted with over one million patients worldwide over the last year.

Life Whisperer, the fertility arm of AI healthcare company Presagen, which operates out of San Francisco, Adelaide (South Australia), and London are at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence fertility research and application. The latest application to roll out of the company’s rapidly emerging portfolio of femtech related technologies uses AI to analyze microscope images of embryos to assist clinicians to identify which embryo will likely lead to a pregnancy. By selecting the best embryo, Life Whisperer aims to shorten the time to pregnancy and improve outcomes for couples undergoing IVF treatment.

Life Whisperer recently completed an international clinical study across 12 clinics in 4 countries, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. The results demonstrated that the AI platform was 25 percent more accurate than highly trained and experienced embryologists in identifying the most viable embryos from the medical images of almost 1,600 patient cycles. The results of the research will be published in the top-ranking journal Human Reproduction in March 2020.

Life Whisperer is already commercially available for patients in Australia, and with the help of Fertility Road, it will be launching across Europe in March 2020. It is also currently seeking regulatory approval in the USA and Asia.

It is hoped this technology will help address the decline in fertility rates globally and increase success rates in fertility clinics which have remained fairly static over the last decade. The solution employs a combination of computer vision and machine learning techniques to help rank and identify healthy embryos for implantation, thereby significantly increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

During the IVF process, eggs are fertilized and develop into embryos. At this point, a clinician (embryologist) needs to decide which embryo to transfer into the patient. Manual selection of embryos is difficult, highly subjective and limited to what the eye can see down a microscope.

The Life Whisperer application allows clinicians to drag and drop single images of patient embryos taken immediately prior to transfer and returns an instant report as to the viability of each embryo to support the clinician’s decision about which embryo to transfer. Unlike other solutions, Life Whisperer’s web-based approach is non-invasive, does not require specialized time-lapse imaging hardware (although can operate on time-lapse images), requires little process change in the clinic, and can be delivered at a low cost to patients.

Fertility Road Co-Founder, Tone Jarvis-Mack says, “Life Whisperer has the technology, Fertility Road has the network. Together we hope to introduce this amazing technology to more fertility clinics around the world. We believe by using this enhanced tool Embryologists will, universally, be able to identify the best embryos and consequently increase the chances of treatment being successful. This technology is a game-changer and is one of the most exciting initiatives in IVF technology for some time”.

ABOUT LIFE WHISPERER

Life Whisperer offers new hope to improve pregnancy rates with a cloud-based AI system, trained on over 20,000 globally sourced 2D embryo images; a powerful basis for the Life Whisperer AI to quickly identify features invisible to the human eye.
