Gorstein Selected as Interim Associate Director of Research at FL Sea Grant

On October 2, 2026, we bid farewell to Matt Gorstein, director for Development and Extension. Gorstein will begin a new role at Florida Sea Grant as the interim associate director of Research on December 1, 2026.

Gorstein began his career at the Consortium as the Coastal Economics Extension Program specialist in 2019, working independently and with applied economics professionals to analyze the value of the state’s coastal and marine resources, as well as the economic benefits of Consortium’s efforts. In 2021, Gorstein was promoted to director for Development and Extension, coordinating the efforts of program specialists and documenting the market and non-market economic benefits of South Carolina’s coastal and marine resources.

Gorstein was instrumental in the development of the Commercial Seafood Apprenticeship Program, supported the shrimp fishery through disaster relief grants, Gullah/Geechee CREATE, and the Gullah Geechee Seafood Trail. He also expanded capacity of two programmatic areas: Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture and Resilient Communities and Economies. In addition, Gorstein authored two reports, Assessing South Carolina’s Ocean Economy and The Economic Benefits of South Carolina’s Beaches and Barrier Islands, and contributed to a third report, The Economic Impact of the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium.

Gorstein, along with Consortium staff, won numerous awards: the 2020 Notable State Documents Award from the South Carolina State Library for the report, Assessing South Carolina’s Ocean Economy; the 2024 Outstanding Team Achievement Award from the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals (ANREP) for the South Carolina Water Chats Program; and the 2026 Outstanding Educational Materials Award from ANREP for the South Atlantic Red Snapper Research Program Website.

The Consortium thanks Matt Gorstein for his years of service, and wishes him all the very best during the next chapter. Fair winds and following seas, Matt!
